Complaints and Incidents:

The primary activity of the Approved Inspection Authority (AIA) is to investigate complaints and incidents of a technical nature.  These investigations include assisting the legal system in prosecuting offenders who violate electrical regulations.  Also, it provides expert opinion with regards civil action when damages are incurred.

On receipt of a written complaint from the public, an investigation will be initiated by our Client Services who will arrange an appointment for an inspector to inspect the electrical installation.  A report will be issued in writing to the User/Owner of the installation. A copy of the report will be sent to the Registered Person who signed the CoC. Should the Registered Person fail to respond, the matter will be submitted to the Chief Inspector, in terms of due process.

To assist with the investigation, Complainants are requested to supply, in writing,  their personal details, site and postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email address, together with a copy of the Certificate of Compliance.  Should a Certificate of Compliance not exist, details of the Electrical Contractor, if available, will be required.

Disputes

By ensuring proper measures of control, the AIA assists electrical contractors and public in:
  • Regulating work done by unregistered electrical contractors thus ensuring that installations are done by registered, qualified electricians.
  • Assisting in solving technical disputes between clients and contractors. A number of instances have occurred where property owners have had illegal electrical installation work done. When selling the property, the seller has tried to blame the accredited person for faults for which he was not responsible. The AIA has assisted in protecting the contractor in these cases.
  • Confirming the correct interpretation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 / 1993 and SABS 10142 / 2003 Code of Practice for the Wiring of Premises regulations.
  • Providing on site advice as required.
