• Approved Inspection Authorities (AIA's) - the way forward.
    Since the promulgation of the new Electrical Installation Regulations (EIR 2009) in March of this year, planning by the current AIA's for the future implementation of certain parts of the above regulations, has been feverish to say the least.

Approved Inspection Authorities (AIAs) are appointed by the chief Directorate, Department of Labour in terms of Electrical Machinery Regulation 12, Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 / 1993.

This initiative was seen by the Chief Directorate as part of it's responsibility of ensuring proper measures of control with regard to health and safety within the electrical field.

The primary function of the AIA is to investigate complaints and incidents of a technical nature. These investigations include assisting the legal system in prosecuting offenders who contravene electrical regulations. Also, it will provide expert opinion with regards civil action when damages are incurred

The Western Cape Electrical Inspection Authority (WCAEIA) was appointed as an Approved Inspection Authority (AIA) on 22 February 2000.

The Western Cape and western areas of the Northern Cape are covered by the WCAEIA. This includes outlining towns such as Beaufort West, Calvinia, Port Nolloth, Springbok, Sutherland Swellendam, etc.
